William Kurelek:The Messenger

January 28 to April 29, 2012

Throughout a career that spanned from mid-1950s until his death, William Kurelek (1927-1977) and his art have meant many different things to many people. The Alberta-born, Manitoba-raised artist was a painter of innocence and fun, his scenes reminiscences of a simpler and timeless past. He was also a chronicler of the experiences of various cultural groups in Canada, devoting entire series to Ukrainian, Jewish, Polish, Irish, French Canadian, and Inuit peoples. Then there is Kurelek the anguished prophet of a modern apocalypse, his art an indictment of the secular age and a testament to unwavering faith.

EXHIBITIONS

February 3-26, 2012
We are pleased to present great collections of three artists:

north gallery - Lee Jung-Do, Buncheong - White slip decorated pottery

The main focus of Lee’s work is reviving the beauty of stamped Buncheong ware in the modern manner over the past 35 years. Lee selects the simplicity of its form as the main factor of his work, infusing the delicacy of naturally stamped design and white slip inlaid pattern with a modern flair.

Middle gallery - William Rueter, Love of Letters

William Rueter RCA MGDC is a private printer, hand binder, and printmaker living in Dundas. Rueter has taught graphic design in Canada, Barbados, and the Philippines, and bookbinding at the Dundas Valley School of Art. He explores the media of wood engraving and linocut in some of his own books and is challenged by the technique of monoprint.

Feature Artist Member’s Wall - Lorne Toews, oil portraits

Toews is a Dundas resident and artist member of the Carnegie Gallery. He has a Master of Fine Arts and is a long time professor at Ontario College of Art and Design. His work is in public and private collections across North America and he has had many exhibitions over the years throughout North America. We are pleased to have his work on the Carnegie walls once again.
